Dr. Saam TouraniSpecialist general surgeon, subspecialised in breast and endocrine surgery

Dr. Saam TouraniDr. Saam Tourani
Mr Saam Tourani is a Melbourne-based specialist general surgeon, subspecialised in breast and endocrine surgery. He has had extensive post fellowship training in thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery.

Saam’s commitment to excellence has been repetitively shown in his academic and professional career. Throughout medical school he was consistently top of his year. Subsequent to his internship he did surgical resident and registrar training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Western Health and passed his FRACS exit exam in 2018. He also did a PhD degree at the University of Melbourne in 2016. He received the Australian Postgraduate Award from 2012 to 2015.

During 2019 and 2020 Saam did further post-fellowship training in breast and endocrine surgery at some very high-volume centres in Australia and the UK. When it comes to treatment of endocrine conditions, Saam truly believes that surgeons are more than just technicians and he takes an active role in the diagnosis as well as treatment of these conditions alongside the patients’ GPs and Endocrinologists. Saam enjoys demystifying these complex conditions for patients and likes to make sure that he can make a positive difference with surgery before subjecting the patient to it.

Saam understands the impact of subtle voice changes following thyroid and parathyroid surgery. His attention to detail and his meticulous dissection technique allows him to preserve patient’s vocal function to the maximum extent during neck surgeries.

Saam has special interest in the work-up and management of adrenal tumours.  While it is very common to find incidental adrenal lumps on various imaging studies, the majority are benign and non-functional and do not require surgery. Saam methodically investigates these tumours to tease apart the more harmful ones in which surgery will be beneficial from those that should be just left alone. He performs endoscopic retroperitoneal adrenal surgery, the approach that is known for minimal pain and quick recovery. Patients are often discharged the next day with minimal requirement for pain relief.
