Following the success of the 1st Postgraduate Course in Endocrine Surgery in the Hunter Valley, the Section of Endocrine Surgeons will be bringing together another distinguished international and national faculty in 2008. Endocrine surgical techniques cross many sub-specialty boundaries and have undergone significant changes in the past few years. On one hand, minimally invasive surgery is becoming standard of care for management of parathyroid adenomas, the diagnosis of solitary thyroid nodules, and for the removal of many adrenal and abdominal neuroendocrine tumours. On the other hand, a more complete surgical approach to differentiated thyroid cancer is becoming accepted, with selective neck dissection, both prophylactic and therapeutic, finding an important role. Australian surgeons have been leaders in many of these fields at an international level. Our international visitor, Paul Gauger, comes from the University of Michigan, an institution which leads the world in the management of abdominal neuroendocrine and pancreatic endocrine tumours.
