Endocrine surgery has undergone significant changes in the past few years. On one hand, minimally invasive surgery has become standard of care for many endocrine disorders including parathyroid adenomas and adrenal tumours, and is increasingly finding a place in the management of thyroid nodules. On the other hand, a more complete surgical approach to differentiated thyroid cancer is becoming accepted, with selective neck dissection, both prophylactic and therapeutic, finding an important role. Likewise for benign bilateral thyroid disease, total thyroidectomy is now the preferred option for both multinodular goitre and Graves’ disease. New technology such as the routine use of nerve stimulators for recurrent nerve protection, or intraoperative PTH testing for hyperparathyroidism are also being promoted. In many of these areas, Australian surgeons have been leaders in the field at an international level. For the 2007 Postgraduate Course, AES brings together an international and national faculty with significant expertise in all these fields to present a series of lectures, case presentations and video demonstrations of operative techniques. All participants will receive a DVD set of the operative techniques, course summary and lecture notes.
